We Teach Them to Tell

March  20, 2008
On Thursday afternoon, my best friend Paige and I were at the local park with our kids. Paige was with her son Jacob and he was doing the things that 3 1/2 year olds do at the park on a regular sunny Thursday in March. I was pushing my son Michael on the big kid swings. He was 4 1/2 at the time, swinging really high and totally thrilled about it. I remember that because I am short and I really had to stretch to reach him. I pushed Michael on his butt and he went higher. Then I pushed him again, on his butt, like I always do. Out of the blue he says in an indignant tone, "Mom, you touched my privates."

"I'm sorry" I said, "I won't do it again". Okay that was weird, I thought.
"That's okay Mom" he replied, in a tone that was more subdued. "Dad touches my privates too."
Then the 'Oh Shit' moment. What did he just say?
"Michael, what did you just say?"
"I said that Dad touches my privates." He's indignant again.
So I'm pushing my son on the swings, and he's just told me this 'THING' and all I could think about was the fact that the woman next to us, who was pushing her baby daughter on the swing, might hear us talking about my son's father touching his privates. I stopped the swing, and said to Michael 'we have to go home now.' That's all I could say after a verbal sucker punch to the brain by my 4 1/2 year old.
